Our favorite "Hogwarts professor," John Granger, has posted an article by H.M. Ketcham titled, 'Good Snape' is not a 'Square Circle'. Ketcham writes:
My hope is to add just enough conjecture, not too wildly unsupported by the text, to the scraps and glimpses we have of Snape’s life to suggest some reasons why Professor Dumbledore persisted, and rightly so, in valuing and trusting him.
I'm firmly in the Snape-is-good camp and look forward to reading Ketcham's article, which I will comment on sometime this weekend. I will also post a belated review of the Goblet of Fire. In the meantime, read Ketcham's article and a new-to-me blog, Quoth the Maven.

I'm with you in the Snape-is-Good fan. Ketcham's article has been on my reading list for some time now, but I haven't gotten to it yet. Maybe this weekend.

Sorry. It's late, and the above comment makes no sense. I mean to say Snape-is-Good club, or something like that. "Fan" doesn't make any sense. And I couldn't have possibly had Ketcham's article on my list for a long time, since it was just posted. But John gathered her thoughts in a post elsewhere that I've been meaning to read.
Maybe I should be sleeping…

Snape is a great character, and I believe he will work against Lord Voldamort at some important time.
But this doesn't make him good. He's mean, cruel, and enjoys the pain of others. Even if he turns out to be working for the good guys.
Would a "narc" be considered good if he became a successful drug dealer, through pushing drugs and murder, just as to be able to bring down the local drug lord (who, let's say, had his one true love murdered)? Bringing down a Big Baddy is good; but becoming as big a Baddy is not so good.
I think Snape loved Lily. Where's the link to your HP#7 predictions/ guesses?
